MARKET UPDATE: GROWTH IN LAOS CONSTRUCTION SECTOR TO REMAIN STRONG OVER THE COMING PERIOD

The growth in Laos’ construction sector is set to remain strong over the coming quarters, according to Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research. The sector’s real growth accelerated in FY2017/18 to 22.6%, from 17.9% in FY2016/17. The continuation of Laos’ strong growth is attributed to the large-scale China-led infrastructure projects and the upgrade of the domestic road network. The most prominent of the many infrastructure projects currently underway is the US$6-7 billion Laos-China railway. The 414km railway would link the Yunnan provincial capital of Kunming in China to the Laotian capital of Vientiane.
